About the Book

One could argue that all photography is a kind of fiction and Before Freedom captures an ideas as much as it captures a certain truth. Playing with images that lie between fact and fiction, Before Freedom argues for expanded notions of subjectivity, offering an imaginary that envisions the inevitable freedom of Palestine.

Instead of focusing exclusively on the violence facing the Palestinians, Before Freedom seeks to answer questions about representations, colonialism and image-making such as: how has photography enabled Israeli colonisation of Palestine? How can we deconstruct the false dominant representations of Palestinians? And how can photography act as a decolonial prism to counter structures of oppression and inequality that are created by false representations rooted in epistemological colonial architectures of domination?

About the Author

Adam Rouhana (b.1991) is a Palestinian-American photographer based between Jerusalem and London. Rouhana's photography works to deconstruct orientalism through his subjective lens within the broader context of Palestine.

He is the Photo Director of The Key, a magazine from the Palestine Festival of Literature.
